Abstract

Problems of electrical power consumption from the battery in an automobile are very common, causing misfiring after idle time. The main objective of this research is to offer a diagnostic technique to intervene in this problem. The voltage drop technique is applied to the different fuses immersed in the vehicle's electrical system with the use of an automotive multimeter. Through this measurement, the current consumption values are compared through the “Fuse Voltage Drop” table. With the appropriate interpretation, the current consumption through the protection elements is determined. The tests were performed with the engine off but the key in contact. The activations of elements such as the fuel pump, horn, headlights, electric fan, windows and windshield wipers yielded results of 22, 31, 17, 4, 36 and 5 milli-volts of voltage drop. The expressed results allow verifying current consumption through voltage drops, since voltage and current are directly proportional according to Ohm's law.
